Even the Devil is Held Together by the Word of God

   November 22

The Word of God holds everything together. It's a fundamental truth that the Scriptures reveal throughout both the Old and New Testaments. In the book of Colossians, we find the profound declaration that "in Him [Jesus Christ, the Word of God] all things hold together" (Colossians 1:17, NIV). This simple yet profound statement underscores the idea that the very fabric of the universe is sustained and bound by the Word of God.

The creative force of the Word of God is evident from the very beginning. In the book of Genesis, we read, "In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth. Now the earth was formless and empty, darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters. And God said, 'Let there be light,' and there was light" (Genesis 1:1-3, NIV). It is through God's spoken Word that the cosmos was brought into existence, demonstrating the immense power inherent in His Word.

God, in His infinite wisdom, has also embedded destiny and purpose within humanity. We are created in the image of God (Genesis 1:27), and as such, we possess in us this creative potential. Just as God spoke to create the universe, we too have the ability to speak into existence things that align with His will. The connection between the Word of God and our creative abilities becomes even more apparent when we consider the impact of meditation and focused thought. Throughout history, men and women have achieved remarkable feats by meditating on their goals and thoughts. This practice aligns with the biblical principle of meditating on God's Word, which brings success and prosperity (Joshua 1:8). It underscores the idea that our thoughts and words have the power to shape our reality.

Furthermore, the Word of God plays a crucial role in holding everything together. It is not confined to the spiritual realm alone; rather, it extends to the physical world as well. This means that we can engage with inanimate objects and situations in a way that aligns with the Word of God's creative power. As individuals, we carry within us a divine purpose, and this purpose is intertwined with the Word of God. When we encounter problems or challenges, we have the potential to bring solutions out of bad situations by aligning our words and thoughts with God's purposeful Word. The Word of God acts as a binding force that holds together everything in existence. Whether it be good or bad ideas, everything with breath, all spiritual and physical objects, even hell and the devils are held together by the Word of God. We have the capacity to shift negative situations (physical or spiritual) onto a positive trajectory because we can call the Word of God out of the bad and align it with the rightful purpose of God’s Word which is to mend, heal, and bring life. This transformation occurs because the Word of God is inherently creative and possesses the power to correct and restore.

In the Bible, there is a concept of binding and loosing, which implies a level of authority given to believers. This authority allows us to engage with brokenness and problems in a proactive manner. By invoking the Word of God that holds the problem together, along with the Word of God within us that desires restoration, we can actively participate in the process of fixing and mending. This principle finds its ultimate expression in the person of Jesus Christ, who is referred to as the Word of God (John 1:1). He came to Earth with the purpose of fixing the broken relationship between humanity and God, a relationship fractured by the disobedience of Adam and Eve. Jesus, as the Word made flesh, exemplified the power of the Word of God to restore and redeem. Jesus healed the sick, restored site to the blind, and raised the dead, we can also do these same acts as we unite with God’s Word (Jesus - John 1:14). As human beings made in the image of God, we have the potential to bring restoration and transformation to the world around us. The Bible teaches that believers are seated in heavenly places with Christ Jesus (Word of God, Ephesians 2:6), signifying our authority and position in Him. This rightful authority empowers us to address and rectify various issues that arise in our lives and the lives of others.

The Word of God encompasses the entirety of creation; He is the Alpha and the Omega, the beginning and the end. He serves as the foundational and unifying force that sustains and guides the universe. As we come to understand our identity as word and image-bearers of God and recognize our rightful place in Him, we gain the capacity to bring things into alignment with their intended purpose. However, it is also essential to acknowledge the presence of an adversary who seeks to hinder this understanding. The Bible warns of an enemy who aims to kill, steal, and destroy (John 10:10). This adversary was cast out of heaven due to his desire to usurp God's position. Similarly, Adam and Eve's disobedience allowed this adversary, now identified as Satan or the Devil, to introduce a sinful nature into humanity.

This fallen nature has led to a state of brokenness, resulting in death, suffering, and chaos. The enemy's ultimate goal is to distort and corrupt the Word and image of God within us, just as he himself became corrupted through rebellion, and the one important distinction between us and the Devil (including his cohorts) is that there is no redemption for them as there is for us. None-the-less they are still held together by the Word of God and that realization is what we can use to our advantage as we have already explored (King David even alluded to this when he declared in the Psalm 139:8 even if I make my bed in Hell, You - Word of God - are there.) Anyway, the redemptive work of Jesus Christ offers a choice to humanity. Just as Adam and Eve had a choice in the garden, we have the opportunity to choose life through Christ. By partaking in the spiritual fruit of the Spirit and inviting Jesus into our lives, we can begin the process of restoration and reconciliation with God.

And then, even after inviting the Word of God (Jesus) into our lives, the choices we make on a daily basis (which should include prayer, worship, reading, declaring and sharing the good news of God’s transformative Word) while residing on the earth, determine if we are following God’s trajectory for our lives. As believers, we are entrusted with the directive to share the knowledge of our identity and the transformative power of the word of God with others. It is through this revelation that individuals can transition from darkness to light, from death to life, and from brokenness to wholeness. God, in His infinite wisdom, places before us the options of life and death, urging us to choose life (Deuteronomy 30:19). This choice aligns with the inherent creative power of the Word of God within us. When we choose life, we activate the transformative potential of the Word of God, allowing Him to bring restitution, correction, and alignment to our lives and the world around us.

In conclusion, the Word of God is not merely a collection of written texts; He is a living and creative force that underpins the universe. As image-bearers of God, we carry within us the potential to participate in the ongoing work of creation and restoration. By aligning our thoughts, words, and actions with the Word of God, we can bring transformation and wholeness to our lives and the world. It is a choice we make daily, guided by the understanding that the Word of God holds everything together, and through Him, we can bring forth life and healing even out of a deathly hopeless situation.
